On Friday, February 7, Year 4 organised a remarkable event that will not soon be forgotten.
What started as an idea to connect to our unit on child rights, evolved into an opportunity for students to make a meaningful impact in the community, by inviting Solemen to come spend time with us for a “Fun Day.” We invited 10 children of various ages and disabilities to come to CCS for the day, where we planned an afternoon of activities, including music, art, kerupuk challenge and indoor games. Additionally, the students decided, as part of their action, that they would also try to raise money to help in whatever capacity they could to donate to those in need. The students quickly took ownership of the project by making bags out of old shirts, creating beautiful jewellery, giving kindness messages and even designing stress balls. Some insisted on spending all their breaks working on their creations in preparation for the sale on Thursday.
Thanks to ALL the support or other students and parents, we managed to raise a total of 7, 350,000 Rupiah! That’s enough to feed 10 families for a month. The students also donated and wrapped books, toys, clothes and games for the children which they proudly shared at the event. Our guests were in awe, sharing big smiles as their hands were full of presents.
But perhaps, more importantly, was the priceless message that was conveyed on the day of the event. I am so proud of the love, kindness, and connections that were nurtured both ways. As much as it was a great giving experience for our classes, it was for sure a huge receiving opportunity as well, as they were able to learn so much from this special experience. Many said on the way out “This is the best Friday ever!” Can’t think of a better way to end the week.
To top it all off, we received an email today from a wonderfully generous parent who was willing to MATCH our earnings. That means we have now raised a total of over 15 MILLION Rupiah, enough to feed 20 FAMILIES for a month!
All moments like this, we are reminded there is no greater gift than to give. Together we proved we can make a lasting impact.
