CCS Blog

The School Committee (SC) of CCS is comprised of parent volunteers, teacher representatives, School Leadership and Yayasan.

It has been our pleasure again this school year to serve and represent the parent community in our advisory role to the School Leadership and Yayasan. Our monthly meetings cover regular topics such as accreditation, curriculum quality, budget, marketing and student welfare.

This year we have additionally increased focus on the CCS five year strategic plan, learning & assessment policy, technology review, parent communications & outreach, new campus planning and closer integration with FoCCS to better represent the parent community. With the escalating impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic, we provided input relating to home-based learning, adjustment issues and well being of families and teaching staff, economic & travel uncertainties and campus re-opening.

A busy and challenging year indeed! From our vantage point, it was encouraging to see CCS’s strong community spirit in how the school community supported each other within CCS and beyond during good and tough times. We look forward to reconnecting with families in the new term and seeing the many exciting school plans unfold, not forgetting the very impressive new campus that will be ready for our return. In the meantime, please feel free to get in touch with any views or feedback via [email protected]

Finally, a big thank you to all SC members and goodbye to members leaving after this school term. Parents interested in joining the SC can get in touch via the above email address, we look forward to welcoming new members.

By Emma Urban

A big THANK YOU to all who participated in our Book Week 2020: Choose Your Own Adventure activities last week! A full overview of this special event is below.

Extreme Readers Photo Contest

Congratulations to John LeRoy in Grade 1T, Tao Galet in Year 6R, and Saul Schmidt in 7CC for winning their respective divisions in our annual photo contest! I will be in touch soon regarding the book you’ve won, courtesy of FoCCS. Thank you to everyone for their submissions – they’re honestly the highlight of my year.

Celebrity Readers and Isolation Reader Reviews on Flipgrid

Anyone can still access either of these Flipgrid topics and are welcome to do so. I want to thank all of the teachers and students that got involved with posting their readings and review – I know it’s a really crazy time we’re working through right now, but I’m so happy to see everyone still keen to share their love of books with one another. Special shout-out to Miss Paterson’s Year 3’s and their incredible reader reviews! I have so many books I need to get reading this summer…

Book Cover Reenactments

This was a new activity and we received some wonderful submissions! A big thanks to Eamon Eastman and his family for their participation in both this and the Extreme Readers Photo Contest; and to Ms Jen and her adorable son Killian for their contributions!

Finally, terima kasih to Ibu Astrid and Pak Wawan – without them, none of this library programming would be possible.

Year 7 Bahasa Indonesia

This term, Year 7 Bahasa Indonesia is looking at pets. They are using their language skills to talk about their pets.

Year 8 Bahasa Indonesia

By Ms Rusmala.

Year 8 this term is looking at Indonesian heroes in education, R.A Kartini and Ki Hajar Dewantara. Students learned about the aspects of poems, read and interpreted poems, as well as composed their poems. These are some students who read and performed their poems for R.A Kartini and Ki Hajar Dewantara.

We are 4 students in Year 6, and we decided to stop deforestation!

To whom it may concern,

Hello, we are the DHD group (deforestation and habitat destruction). We are 4 students in year 6, and for our showcase, we decided to stop deforestation. We have all worked tirelessly hard to complete our own palm oil booklet to help stop habitat destruction in the majestic Rainforests. When you go shopping at any shop, bring your own palm oil booklet, it will tell you what to buy and what not to buy. It is very helpful because it tells you what products contain palm oil and which products don’t. And, the booklet and website are digital, so we are not using any paper. If you have a family member or friend, you can always show them the booklet and website, so they are informed too. We really want to spread awareness so this horrible activity stops right now. Remember to always bring a device with you when you go to any shop so you can lower your palm oil usage. You can find the PDF palm oil booklet that we created at the very bottom.

We have also created a website that includes much more information about deforestation and Palm oil usage in Indonesia and all around the world too. We thought it could be helpful to realise how bad deforestation is, and that the best way to stop this horrible activity from happening is to take action for it, inform yourselves, and spread awareness. Another good way to stop deforestation is to make other people realise that it is bad. You might want to have a look at our website right now:

And last of all… STOP DEFORESTATION!!! Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Julie, Pauline, Tao and Osbourne

Music by KS2 students – Bucket drumming.

“This term, KS2 students have been learning bucket drumming in their virtual music classes. Mr Sammy led some mini-lessons to teach the basics of drumming and how to read drum notation. Then students read and performed rhythm patterns with their bucket drums at home. All year groups culminated the unit by teaching someone else how to bucket drum or composing their own patterns. Here are some examples of their learning!” – Ms Katherine Stivers.

Wellbeing Resources

Although many of us are starting to begin to come out of our cocoons, I want to recognize that this pandemic can still feel traumatic on many levels. Part of that is a feeling of immobility, feeling stuck. We might feel numb and zoned out, despite being out of the house more than before. We might feel a lack of connection or fear about what the future may hold.

It may be good to try these tips:

 – don’t overwhelm yourself with news or start comparisons

truly ⁣⁣ – make sure you’re connecting with people who bring the best out of you and you’re not just giving to others

 – Let them out! If we numb sadness we risk numbing happiness and joy also. You can let them out through writing, journaling, making art, talking to someone. Don’t forget to cry if you need to!

 – Move your body, go for a run, put on some music and move. Make sure you take plenty of walks!

It’s Ok to recognize that this is a difficult time, even as we start to feel more freedom.

Message from the School Counsellor, Ms. Bella – “We understand that many parents and students are going through a very difficult time right now. Managing home learning on top of very real worries, while being isolated is challenging. One thing that we have in common across the whole community, is that we’re missing things. Missing family members walk on the beach, school, teachers, smiles, hugs – the simple things we took for granted before. But what we still have is our ability to look after our foundation, our wellbeing, our right to care for ourselves. This may be through mindfulness activities, exercise, nutritious food, plenty of sleep, connecting with friends and family online. This freedom has not been taken away from us. Some of us are embracing this ‘new normal’.

Saying this. It’s OK to not be OK right now. It can seem like some may be thriving on social media, but we can recognize that many are struggling. I want to let you know that if you need some support, advice or recommendations on who you (or your child) could speak to, please do not hesitate to get in touch.”
