Dear CCS community,
As usual, it has been a busy week at CCS! Thank you to all the parents who attended our Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday. SLCs are an important opportunity for you to learn about your child’s learning, passions, and activities. Even more importantly, SLCs are about students growing in their confidence and reflecting as self-directed learners. We hope you enjoyed the SLCs! If you have specific questions about your child’s progress, please speak directly with his/her teacher.
Last week, we also held a Professional Learning day for teachers. Growing together as a team is a priority for us! Primaries professional learning has focused on enhancing our literacy programme through Readers and Writers Workshop as well as “Creating Cultures of Thinking.” Secondary teachers focused on enhancing our approach to teaching student self-management and social skills, part of the IB “Approaches to Learning” framework. Both Primary and Secondary teachers also explored a range of technology tools that we can use to facilitate learning and collaboration.
This week, we also look forward to our Secondary Production on Thursday and Friday, 6:30 pm. Please also join us on Thursday at 8:30 in the Secondary Staffroom for a parent session on the CCS Mission, Strategic Plan, and our overall Budget.
Finally, we released our 20-21 Tuition and Fees Schedule via email on Monday. It is also attached. We are working on exciting plans for the 20-21 school year! As a reminder, if you plan to leave CCS at the end of this academic year, we must receive written notice before the start of Term 4 in order for RND to be refunded.

Last week saw the 10th bi-annual awarding of the ‘CCS History Department presents, the Year 7 Most Important Person in the World Ever Presentation Trophy’. This prestigious trophy has been around since 2015 and is a highlight of the year 7 academic calendar. Both finalists have their names engraved on the back of the trophy which now features a virtual roll call of academic role models from the last 5 years.
This semesters final was one of the closest fought yet with Louise Kretz representing Galileo Galilei versus Jaden Topolewski representing King Henry VII.
This Semester, the guest adjudicator was Mr Beavan the Head of Humanities in secondary. Both contestants made many strong points to support their candidate however when the final closures were made Mr Beavan announced Louise to be the winner. This final debate was possibly the strongest so far, it was clear that both students had worked very hard on their research and showed that they clearly understood what they were presenting. Both Louise and Jaden should be proud of their performances as well as now having their names alongside some of CCS’s most distinguished academic students! – Jason Green.
As some members of our community may have noticed the school has displayed and started selling greeting cards at CCS under the banner of the PAPERjam Gotong Royong initiative. This is the story of PAPERjam and the purpose of the fundraising drive.
Three years ago, Connor Bradley founded PAPERjam as a new student-led Gotong Royong initiative. This group had the purpose of recycling used school paper to make new saleable handmade paper. After a year of experimentation, we could produce small quantities of fairly successful handmade paper. However, upon reflection the group looked at the limited impact this was having and began looking around for other ideas and potential organisations to support. It was here we stumbled across the Precious Plastics Initiative (https://preciousplastic.com/
After being in touch with the team at Wedoo, an organisation making plastic recycling machinery, we decided to try to fundraise to buy our own machines. The idea went from raising funds to support someone else’s initiative to becoming our own initiative that works as part of a global community focused on solutions for plastic waste. In the next few months, a group of year 12 students will begin working towards creating a Precious Plastics Network Community Point at CCS.
‘The outcome of a Community Point is an active and strong local network of people and places collecting plastic, building machines, shredding and melting and inspire others to get involved.’ With the support of this community initiative, we hope to have a plastic shredder before the end of 2020.
As a solutions-based group, we hope to show others that action, rather than discussion, is a legitimate and accessible direction if you are prepared to work together towards a common goal. So far we have focussed on making greeting cards as we saw a gap in the market here in Bali and could utilise the skills of the in the PAPERjam group. As we continue in our quest we will diversify, so if you see the PAPERjam logo around remember all funds raised are going towards a worthwhile initiative that will make a legitimate impact. – Jason Green.

Year 6 Gender Equality group decided to spread awareness about gender inequality for their showcase project and they decided to make Gender Equality Day last week at school on March 5th, 2020. – Mimi, Year 6.
