Dear CCS Parents and Community,
CCS recently revised our “Teaching and Learning Policy,” working to define quality learning at CCS. One key element of our policy is that quality learning is “Based on inquiry with learners demonstrating curiosity, exercising choice, setting goals, and taking responsibility as life-long learners.”
We focus on students taking increasing responsibility and choice in their inquiries over time. mTwo excellent examples are the Year 6 Showcase and the IB Diploma Programme Extended Essay. Both of these experiences are “capstones”, aiming to help students bring together all of their learning and demonstrate their inquiry skills. Year 6 students are working in small groups around the concept of Conflict, with students conducting a wide range of research, taking action to address a conflict, and demonstrating their learning.
Students continue to develop important inquiry, research, and problem-solving all the way through school. The DP Extended Essay is a final culmination of their inquiry skills. Last week, our Year 13 students, who recently completed their EEs, showcased their projects to our Year 12s, who are early in their EE process. Ms. Joe Zeiler, our EE Coordinator and English teacher, highlights much more about EE and what it entails later in the Newsletter. Check it out!
Another important showcase of student learning and inquiry is our Student-Led Conferences. These are scheduled for March 10th for students up to Year 10. Please mark your calendars!

The Extended Essay is one of three components that make up the core of the IB Diploma Programme. The Extended Essay (or EE) gives students the opportunity to undertake an in-depth research project on a topic of their choice with the final outcome being a 4000 word externally assessed dissertation.
The Extended Essay is a challenging and rewarding experience which prepares students for different pathways beyond the Diploma Programme by developing skills valued by both tertiary education and employers. The EE experience at CCS embodies the essence of an IB education in developing inquiring, critical, lifelong learners.
On January 22nd, Year 13 students were given the opportunity to discuss and celebrate their EEs with Year 12s who are at the beginning of their Extended Essay journey. Year 12s received advice from Year 13s on time management, methodologies, research questions and supervisors. It was a valuable experience for Year 12s as well as a great opportunity for Year 13s to celebrate their hard work, learning and perseverance. The EE fair culminated with Year 12s reflecting on what they have learned and creating a list of important tips and advice to be displayed in the classroom. Year 12 students will further reflect on what they have learned through written entries in their ManageBac EE reflections spaces.

This week, we are very excited to welcome Steven Dossou as a guest speaker to CCS! He will be speaking to both Secondary and Key Stage 2 students on Wednesday afternoon. Steven will share his empowering story of overcoming adversity and showing incredible resilience. He will be doing a special presentation just for parents on Friday, February 7th at 2:15, Primary staff room. All are welcome to join! – Ms Rola Ghadban.
Last Wednesday, PAUD Dharma Kumara came to visit our Year 1 classes. The students joined together to design individual Ogoh-Ogoh, played together, and then shared a morning snack. This visit was extremely enjoyed by all of those involved.
Thank you to all the Year 1 parent who provided us with a snack.

At the start of each Semester, the Middle School Design Tech classes are faced with a 2-week design challenge to introduce them to the CCS Design Cycle. This semester, the Year 8’s were faced with the ‘Pooh Sticks challenge’, where they were asked to research, design then build a boat made from natural materials that could be raced in the river between the Primary and Secondary campus. As part of the process, they were taught the Balinese craft of ‘Ceper’ and ‘Ketupat Ikan’ making.
Unfortunately, due to overconfidence in our boat designs, a pre-rapid launch proved the undoing of all vessels with the race proceeding as a submarine battle. The Year 9’s were faced with the ‘Poison River’ river challenge where they needed to make a functioning scale model for getting supplies over a poisoned river. They were first introduced to medieval weapon design. They were given the list of available resources and time to design and build their solution. There were prizes awarded for the longest successful launch and most interesting solution. These challenges are intended to encourage creative thinking and problem solving while modelling the design process that will be used for the upcoming assignments. – Mr Jason Green.
CCS will be adding a community Yoga class on Wednesday afternoons (5 pm to 6 pm) and Friday mornings (6.15 am to 7.15 am). This open level community class will be lead by Bernd (formerly at Desa Seni). It is a bring your own mat session and will take place on the Secondary campus, in the Student Joglo (next to the warung). The cost is Rp 120,000 per class (with a reduced rate for CCS staff). This one-hour Vinyasa Flow class weaves together a wide range of yoga postures with a thread of movement and breath, drawing from the rich tradition of the ancient yogic path to create a challenging, yet approachable, practice that is rooted in tradition and yet utterly modern at the same time.
Open to all levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Please bring your own mat!
Bernd has been throwing himself wholeheartedly into the deep waters of daily, dedicated yoga practice since the very beginning of 2001. Coming originally from the performing arts in various guises, he finally allowed the stage life to fade and the yogic life to come into deeper focus. Being drawn, from an early age, toward seeing, understanding and exploring life in its fullness and entirety, he works with the tools of asana, pranayama, meditation, and study in order to plumb the depths of experience. His aim as a teacher is always to give each student exactly what he or she needs at any given time, which has led him to learn as much as possible about different modalities of movement, meditation and philosophical approaches.
Bernd has an abiding passion for helping to ease the suffering of others, which has led him down the path of yoga for therapeutic uses as well as yoga as a path toward ultimate freedom and truth. Over the years, he has gathered tools in his own practice and in his teachings from Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga, the yogic approach to therapy, as well as a thorough and continuing education in philosophies of all shapes and sizes. The massive variety of meditation practices and traditions are a deep passion for Bernd, and he relishes the opportunity to practice and pass on these wonderful teachings. Expect to be challenged in his classes, but never pushed; thrown into the deep end, but always with a paddle, and always with kindness and care.

CCS is launching an Emergency/Essential Reminders Notification WhatsApp Group in the Primary Programme. You should have received an email and a Remind message this week. The prerequisite for parents to receive notifications from CCS is that you need to add the school’s phone number to your WhatsApp contact list and then message the number with your name, your child(ren) name(s), and class. Parents who choose not to set up CCS as a contact in their WhatsApp and message Ms. Deisy will not get these notification updates.
