Dear CCS Parents,
Our first semester of 19-20 is now complete, and what a semester it has been! We welcomed many new faces in August including Mr Ben, a number of new teachers, and over 100 new students. As we finish off the semester, I hope all of these new faces now feel connected and engaged in our CCS community. Semester highlights include the EOTC Camps, receiving impressive IGCSE results, IBDP Induction for Year 12s, regular collaboration with local schools in our community, a hugely successful BSSA Volleyball season, Bali MUN, and regular showcases of learning like the Science Fair, invention sharing, and many others.
Coming up in Term 3 we look forward to Student-Led Conferences (March 10), our Council of International Schools visit in April, international MUN trips, a Global Issues Network Conference, BSSA Basketball, our annual Swim Carnivals (Feb 12-14), Secondary production, and important mock exams for Year 11 and 13. As always, we look forward to a busy but engaging term of learning.
Last night, we capped off the semester with the KS2 production of “Let the Games Begin.” The kids were flexible and committed, carrying on through a bit of rain to have an excellent performance! Well done KS2 students and teachers! The show raised a good lesson to consider as we start off the holiday vacation – get off our devices and get active and engaged together! The holiday is a great time to explore, play, and learn together as a family. Last Friday, a group of students from CCS took part in the first-ever renewable energy symposium for students. It was organised by the Montessori School Bali’s Adolescent Programme students in collaboration with su-re.co and a representative from the Ministry of National Development Planning. Students from six schools were given the opportunity to ask questions regarding Indonesia’s policies to reduce climate change and have an input into the government’s new Low Carbon Initiative. It was an interesting morning with some important issues discussed and an excellent chance to network and identify opportunities for future collaboration. – Ms Jill Atkinson.
Last Friday, we went to the Montessori school, to talk about climate change. There were many students from local and international schools to ask questions about Indonesia’s current policies on renewable energy, which were answered by the representative from the Government. It was a good experience to learn from different school’s opinion of climate change, it was also good opportunities to learn from the Government as well. – Fidelia, Year 12.
It was a really interesting experience getting to see what the government plans to do in the future to help prevent climate change. If these plans will happen or not will be interesting to see. During the symposium we asked questions to the panel, some of which were answered briefly whilst others were answered at length. The Montessori school did a great job hosting this symposium and in the future, we hope to do something similar at CCS! – Zoe, Year 12.
It has been a long but incredibly successful season! You may have heard that CCS teams won 7 of the 8 available first-place trophies on Junior Finals Day. This is a fantastic achievement for all involved and is something all of our students should be very proud of. We should also be proud of the sheer number of students we had participating this season, a total of 13 teams and 98 students in the junior division. This is more than any other school in BSSA!
As always, a big thank you also goes to our coaches and parents/guardians for your efforts and support throughout the season.

On Monday, the Year 10 Design Technology class took a field trip to look at workshops that are working in the field of sustainable design solutions.
The first stop was the Wedoo Workshop in Sanur. This workshop specialises in two fields of sustainable design, designing and manufacturing plastic recycling machinery; and recycling motorbikes and turning them into modern electric powered machines. Willy and Putu took us through their processes, explaining where their company comes from and why they began, their design and manufacturing processes for their Plastic recycling machinery and then let the students have a go at shredding and extruding plastic into recycled flooring tiles. I think we were all surprised at how simple the process of repurposing plastic is and how economically viable these solutions are.
We then moved on to Potato Head where we were introduced to the sustainability focus of their new hotel complex. Lauren showed us through the new rooms and explained the measures Potato Head are taking to minimise their plastic waste footprint among other sustainability measures. Some of the key points she explained were their processes to minimise plastic use as well as what they are doing to deal with their plastic and polystyrene waste. She showed us chairs and room fittings made from repurposed plastic and other room fittings made from recycled polystyrene. Seeing what can be done with the repurposed plastics was great and gave the students some excellent ideas that linked back to what we had seen at the Wedoo Workshop.
This field trip also tied into the Paperjam Gotong Royong Fundraising Project. This group who started out recycling paper has shifted its focus to fundraising to purchase a Plastic Recycling System for CCS and the school community.
Students in Year 10 are inquiring how we defend Indonesia. They were discussing actively the recent problems in Indonesia and proposed critical solutions towards them. They were then assigned to write a speech on a particular topic and provide relevant solutions. In a coincidence, they performed their speech during the national accreditation and impressed the assessors.Written and video by Ms Maya.
Last week, the Indonesian Social Studies students had a storytelling session with Early Years. The stories were about some folktales from Sumatra, Indonesia. – Ms Neni.
Research suggests that taking notes in real-time and thinking about those notes later boost student learning (McGregor, 2019). Year 5 has embraced the possibilities for student responses by incorporating sketchnoting through Art with the concepts of form and function. Sketchnoting is a note-taking technique that taps into both the verbal and visual processing powers of your brain in a way that makes you a better learner, problem-solver, and storyteller. Students have been experimenting and playing with the different fonts, lettering styles, writing utensils, icons, headings, arrows and frames to sketchnote their favourite quotes and story map a chapter from a read-aloud. – Ms Shannon.
On Tuesday 26th November and Wednesday 4th December, 26 students from TK-A joined the Early Years classes. The students participated in a variety of stations focusing on Mathematics, Literacy, Fine Motor Development, Gross Motor Development and Social Skills. The students and teachers from Kumara Dharma were introduced to the concept of play-based learning.
A Professional Development session was held with 5 teachers from the school about Play-Based Learning and ways to implement this in the classroom. Next Term, our Early Years teachers will visit PAUD Kumara Dharma to run Play-Based Learning sessions in their setting. – Ms Merryn Wade.
