In Year 5S, students have been working on meditation practice once a day all term. Each day has a different intention, with some days being about scanning the body and noticing any sensations, other days can be about sending positive thoughts to ourselves and others, and even some days can be focusing on stillness and tuning out distractions. It has been quite the journey for some students, who couldn’t sit still for more than a few seconds at a time when we first began. When I snapped this photo this Thursday afternoon, every student in the class was able to tune out distractions and sit still for a minute and a half straight. That is no small feat! The majority of the students are now able to sit still for 5 minutes while noticing and controlling their breath.
The students are learning how to focus their mind, tune out distractions and notice sensations happening in their body. They are learning how to have empathy for those around them and be able to let go of negative feelings towards others. It has been a joyful process for me to watch them go through and hopefully a practice they will continue long after they leave my classroom this year.
